Jazz Hoeilaart

Description:
Jazz Hoeilaart was founded by Albert Michiels in 1979 – within the framework of the annual festival of grapes and wine – with the intention to introduce accomplished young jazz-musicians under 35 years of age. In the beginning only Belgian and Dutch groups sent in their applications. Since then this initiative has evolved into one of the most important international contests.
Between 1979 and 2011 the organizers received 1889 entries from more than 50 countries, from Australia and America to Japan, India, the former Soviet States .and Europe. During the past 33 years 317 groups have taken part in the contest. The first prizes went successively to Belgium (1979,1980,1981,1982,1993, 1999, 2007 and 2012) Poland (1983, 1998, 2008 and 2011), Sweden (1984,2000 and 2003); Finland together with Bulgaria (1985), Israel (1986 and 2006), the Netherlands (1987 and 1992), Finland (1988), Russia (1989), Denmark together with USA (1990, 1991 and 2010), Germany (1994, 2002 & 2009), Hungary (1995 and 2001), Canada (1996) Italy 1997, Norway (2004) and France (2005). In addition there were numerous other awards such as the trophy for the best soloist, best bassist, and prizes for the best interpretation of Belgian compositions, also important contracts in Belgium and abroad. In short we can look back on a rich period in the history of jazz. By stimulating young talented players & give them the attention & support they need, Jazz Hoeilaart keeps true to its main ambition, to stimulate jazz & to make a contribution to the cultural development and the future of our society.
