Voted one of world’s “50 Great Voices” by NPR, Buika - born on the island of Majorca to Guinean immigrant parents - has emerged as a true innovator, a must-see artist among jazz aficionados. Her evident African roots and her cosmopolitanism, developed in clubs in Spain and Americanized during a surreal stint in Las Vegas, explain Buika’s rare self-possession. But nothing can quite explain her ability to connect, in spite of the fact that she sings nearly exclusively in Spanish. Buika is simply one of those rare and wonderful “one-listen” artists. Buika’s personal background has left its traces on her music, in which she combines elements of soul, hip hop, jazz, copla and flamenco. Therefore, Buika is especially marveled at for her ability to cope with every style of music.
Hailed as the ”Flamenco Queen”, Buika is an artist whose time has arrived. With a 2012 summer European tour and more American dates set for the fall, Buika is rapidly being recognized as one of the most dynamic, individualistic performers in contemporary vocal jazz. In 2009, her album “El Ultimo Trago”, homage to the Mexican singing legend Chavela Vargas, won the Latin Grammy award for “Best Traditional Tropical Album.” The following year, Buika recorded a duet with Seal, “You Get Me” and more recently, Buika appeared as a guest vocalist on sitar virtuoso Anoushka Shankar’s cd ”Traveller”. Her latest release is ”En mi piel”, an exhaustive two-disc compilation on Warner Music Latina that showcased Buika’s breathtaking diversity and range - and her development as a total artist. Buika is well known for her extraordinarily impressive live performances, full of energy and emotions. When you listen to her croon, you just can’t help but fall in love with her depth and the sincerity behind every single performance. Who can resist the charm of an artist with a stirring voice pouring her heart and soul out every time she sings? Indeed, Buika is the real deal and a perfect example of what a true artist is.
