Intensive Workshops in New York City for Vocalists and Jazz Musicians at the New York Jazz Workshop School of Music

For jazz musicians around the world summer is the time to take their playing to the next level! Located in the world capital of jazz, the New York Jazz Workshop School of Music (NYJW) will again offer focused four-day workshops, July 23 through August 30. Expertly led by leading jazz educators and performers, the Summer Summit Series for adults helps musicians of varying skill levels gain unmatched jazz knowledge and develop professional techniques. The Summer Summit Series at NYJW include workshops, each limited to ten students, on improvisation, jazz guitar, singing, rhythm, composition, arranging and production:

 

Jazz Improvisation Workshop (July 23-26)
Saxophonist and NYJW cofounder Marc Mommaas with drummers Tim Horner and Tony Moreno will cover harmonic, melodic and rhythmic principles across many composition styles. These three jazz masters have led this workshop in conservatories around the world, and have impeccably perfected the key components to teaching improvisation. This workshop covers many different composition styles, as well as harmonic, melodic and rhythmic principles. Marc Mommaas will lead the program and will be joined by Tim Horner on the first two days and by Tony Moreno on the second two.

 

Jazz Guitar Workshop (July 30-Aug 2)
This summer clinic guitar intensive is led by two of the world’s leading jazz guitar voices. Vic Juris, who teaches at the New School, has recorded and collaborated with jazz legends and has authored several educational guitar books. Kenny Wessel has played with the Ornette Coleman band for over 10 years. He is part of the NYJW faculty and tours the world with various groups. This workshop is an absolute must for serious jazz guitarists. Faculty: Kenny Wessel (7/30 and 7/31) and Vic Juris (8/1 and 8/2) special guest Marc Mommaas.

 

Vocal Workshop for Beginners /Intermediate (Aug 6-9)
Singer Jocelyn Medina focuses students on key vocal techniques to help them develop and enjoy their unique voices. The Summer Workshop – Vocal Intensive for Beginners will allow you to learn what it takes to be a professional jazz vocalist. This summer jazz workshop focuses on a variety of important vocal techniques. Renowned singer, Olivia Foschi, helps students develop and enjoy their unique singing voice. This is your opportunity to be heard in a big way. A special guest will join the workshop on Piano.

 

Rhythm Workshop (Aug. 13-16)
For all instruments, covers swing feel, composition, mixed meter, polyrhythms and more. The Summer Workshop – Rhythm Intensive for all instruments, will allow you to take a journey through rhythm and time with A-list New York City jazz musician and instructor, Tony Moreno. This summer jazz workshop covers topics such as swing feel, composition, mixed meter, polyrhythm, playing in rhythm sections, ear training, technique, sound, form and soloing. This summer’s special guest will be alto saxophonist and composer John O’Gallagher.

 

Vocal Workshop (Aug 20-23)
Led by singer Fay Victor, immediate to advanced singers will expand their voices through a focus on vocal styling, phrasing, ear training, improvisation and more. Expand your voice. This summer vocal intensive is an opportunity for vocalists to improve their skills under the guidance of a true professional. The workshop is led by the multi-talented and accomplished, Fay Victor, who focuses on topics such as vocal styling, phrasing, ear training, rhythmic diversity, improvisation, vocal health, diction and more. Jazz Composition, Arranging & Production Workshop (Aug 27-30)
Led by Grammy® winning composer, arranger and trombonist, Doug Beavers, this summer jazz workshop guides students through the process of creating original compositions and arrangements. The arrangements will be performed by the NYJW faculty band. A variety of compositional concepts will be discussed, along with an analysis of existing works from master arrangers and composers. Students will then be led through the entire process of composition and arranging, from initial sketches to a completed first draft of the manuscript. Techniques will be given that encourage forward momentum in the compositional process, ultimately giving the student powerful tools to include in their all-around musicianship.

 

Taught by faculty members who combine excellent teaching skills with impressive jazz credentials, throughout the year the New York Jazz Workshop provides a proven methodology for learning jazz through ear training; melodic, harmonic and rhythmic exercises; and a combination of individual and group performances in jazz-rich, musical New York City, with its lively performance and jam session scene.
