Jazzfestival Saalfelden 2024 - first names announced

As soon as the first spring festival has been celebrated with the Easter weekend, we are announcing the next confirmed acts for this year's 44th edition of the Jazzfestival Saalfelden from 22 to 25 August, just in time for the upcoming branch meeting, jazzahead! in Bremen.

While we have already been able to present names such as Mona Matbou Riahi, Daniel Erdmann, Kris Davis, Johnathan Blake and always welcome guests such as Théo Ceccaldi, Oli Steidle and Judith Schwarz, the line-up now includes exciting projects involving other musical improvisation legends. James Brandon Lewis will meet The Messthetics - also described as a "cultural clash of hardcore and jazz" (M. Schray) - and together with saxophonist Lewis, Joe Lally on bass, Brendan Canty on drums and guitarist Anthony Pirog will take attempts at musical categorisation ad absurdum with ballads and bizarre swing through to post-punk, hard funk and almost classic jazz rock.

We are also looking forward to the formation Amirtha Kidambi's Elder Ones. With bold improvisations, they also push the boundaries of jazz and electronic forms by virtue of Kidambi's amazing vocals. Through themes such as anti-colonialism, the rise of global fascism, violence against Asian Americans and the persistent inequalities in the growing shadow of late capitalism, the compositions become not just a lament, but an appeal for racial and labour justice.

A combination of free jazz, traditionals and hard rock, plus the incredible voice of Sofia Jernberg, that's what the audience can expect from the third confirmed act: The End. Kjetil Møster (cl /t-sax/electronics), Mats Gustafsson (fl, b-sax, electronics), Anders Hana (bar- & bass guit, langeleik) and Børge Fjordheim (dr) together with Jernberg create a bubbling soundscape of dynamics, intensity and weirdness.
