Under the leadership of chief conductor and artistic leader, Christoph Müller since the season 2005/06, the Göttinger Symphonie Orchester, founded in 1862, offers a demanding and differentiated program in the Stadthalle, the Altes Rathaus (old Town Hall) and, as ‘cultural ambassador of the country’, all over Lower Saxony and further away the whole year round.

2006: 112 concerts, 58 in Göttingen (22 season tickets) 50.685 visitors in Göttingen ( 17.775 season-ticket holders).

The worldwide oldest and internationally renowned Händel-Festspiele which have taken place in Göttingen since 1920, is the annual highlight of the music life in Göttingen. With 14.117 visitors in 56 performances, the Festival 2006 was a great success.

Further important institutions concerning music and classical performances are the Jugend Sinfonie Orchester (Youth Symphony Orchestra), the Kantorei St. Jacobi and the Stadtkantorei in St. Johannis, the Göttinger Knabenchor (Boys’ Choir), the concerts in the University Hall (Aula) of the Göttinger Kammermusik-Gesellschaft, the Internationalen Orgeltage (Organ Days), the concert performances of the sponsor circle Alte Musik (Old Music) or the musical matinees for older citizen and the Göttinger Portraittage, organized by the Department of Culture (FD Kultur).

Popular highlights include the annual Göttinger Jazz Festival, several concerts in the Lokhalle and the Stadthalle, Night of the Clubs, organized by the Rockbüro or the Open air im KWP, organized by the FD Kultur. During the entire year there are numerous other Rock-, Pop-, Jazz concerts in various music bars like Blue Note, Apex, Café Kreuzberg, electroosho, Exil, JT-Keller or T-Keller, Irish Pub or the traditional Nörgelbuff.
