Description:
De Roma was built as a film and concert hall in 1928. In 2003 it was rediscovered as an hidden and forgotten space being in very bad shape after physically been neglected by a private owner. With the efforts of many volunteers, this venue is restored in its original state after 20 years of inactivity.
Thanks to the joined efforts of 600 volunteers this hall has become a cultural venue where everybody can enjoy culture and entertainment at democratic prices. Audiences attend high quality concerts of jazz, pop, rock music of young and new talent or highly renowned international bands. The maximum capacity of the venue is 2000 people in standing setting or 1340 people seated. The multi-functional hall also allows to enjoy smaller gigs for e.g. 300 people, or specifically targeted for elderly dance afternoons, folk ballroom dances and all kinds of community events. Once a week we screen art house movies. But De Roma is more. In a remoted area, this venue is a flagship for social cohesion and social mobility. Many inhabitants of the district of Borgerhout and the city of Antwerp declare this venue as being owned by them. Co-production is key. Furthermore, activities organised are not value- free. De Roma stands for more social justice, equality, solidarity, and participation.
