Over the third weekend of May, more specifically between May 16 and 18, Cerkno will again take over the role of the Slovenian jazz capital. In that period, the 24th edition of the esteemed Jazz Cerkno festival will take place and will put on display an extremely wide array of contemporary jazz. As tradition goes, the emphasis of the variegated program will be mainly on the practices that tackle jazz with modern approaches, and if jazz is going to be "paired" with some other genres, even better! And there will be quite a lot of other genres: from punk through pop to electronics and experimental, as well as Indian and African traditions, and also new classical music. Every night there will be a musical story for itself, a set of three diverse bands with different style of music that will satisfy even so demanding jazz ear!
The Cerkno festival continues to take care of Slovenian jazz forces. So, the festival opening on Thursday, May 16, will be marked by domestic musicians: a special project will be presented by the Prešeren Fund award winner, multi-instrumentalist Boštjan Gombač together with the Slovenian Philharmonic Brass Ensemble. They will perform special program prepared for Cerkno, in which elements of jazz with traditional and classical music will be combined. Gombač will play a bunch of instruments, also a tidldibab whistle (a replica of the oldest human musical instrument from the nearby archaeological site of Divje babe). This will be followed by Swiss-German trio Stoffner / Lovens / Mahall with the legendary free jazz drummer Paul Lovens, who celebrates 70 years this year! The conclusion of the first festival day will again be marked by Slovenian creativity - with the new Slovenian-Italian quartet Rotten GirlZ led by the guitarist Samo Šalamon, who will this time play bass guitar.
Koromač is the name of the sextet from Slovenian city of Vrtojba; especially for the concert at our festival on Friday, May 17, the band who celebrates its 10th anniversary and is known for their fierce vision of jazzcore, will be enlarged to nonet. The performance will be recorded and published as the band's second album. Amirtha Kidambi Elder Ones is an American quartet led by the vocalist Amirtha Kidambi, who combines spiritual jazz with South Indian and experimental music in a compelling way. Friday's triple set will be round off by the international Luc Ex' Assemblée quartet, led by bassist Luc Ex (former member of The Ex). In creating the restless mixture of classical jazz and modern streams he will be helped by saxophonists Rachel Musson and Ab Baars, and versatile drummer Hamid Drake.
On the closing festival day, Saturday, May 18, the music program will start at the afternoon concert at the Music School, where the American cellist Daniel Levin will perform his solo recital with music floating between jazz and classical. The evening set of three concerts will start with the international trio Fish Wool, comprised of excellent improvisers of the younger generation: Susana Santos Silva, Yedo Gibson and Vasco Trilla. After that, we will listen to a delicacy: the concert of the cult Australian trio The Necks, known for playing a one-hour improvised track that slowly moves from strict minimalism to lush passages and back to silence ... But there will be no silence in Cerkno, as for the very end of the festival we have saved a striking Italian eight-piece band Maistah Aphrica with a juicy and danceable mix of jazz and African music.
In addition to the musical program, we have also prepared a varied accompanying program with an exhibition, workshops, a round table and more... The Cerkno Hotel prepared favourable jazz packages for our visitors, and the tickets for the Jazz Cerkno Festival's 24th edition are already on sale!
See ya in Cerkno from 16 to 18 May 2019!
