INTERVIEW MIT VITALIY KYIANYTSIA:
1) Why did you come to Berlin and where did you live before?
Before I came to Berlin I lived in several different cities: Kyiv, Warszaw, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart. I came to Berlin because of its wide and diverse jazz community. The diversity of Berlin Jazz music scene has attracted me at most.
2) Why do you play jazz? What does it mean to you?
I play jazz because I can express myself in the best way playing this music. As a former classical player jazz gave me some fresh breath of air for my musical career. The freedom of improvisation is very natural for me and I feel myself very comfortable while improvising.
3. Can you tell a bit about the jazz scene in your country of origin? Jazzhotspots, colleges, clubs, musicians?
My Homeland Ukraine has a rich jazz community, especially of my generation. I could name a lot of prominent ukrainian jazz players among them: Dennis Adu, Igor Osypov, Ganna Gryniva, Dmitriy Alexandrov, Igor Zakus and others. Ukraine has a few major jazz festivals such as: Leopolis Jazz Fest, Jazz Kolo, Dnipro Jazz Fest.
