The Festival will be held from April 5 to 13, 2019. Among the headliners of this 37th edition: Stanley Clarke, Erik Truffaz, Stacey Kent, Michel Portal and Baptiste Trotignon, Rhoda Scott, Yaron Herman, Ezra Collective, Sarah McCoy, Emile Parisien, Mahalia, Theo Ceccaldi, Ana Carla Maza or Leo Tardin and Gauthier Toux. The OFF Festival will offer more than 110 concerts to the public. During 9 days, international jazz stars and emerging artists will meet in a unique atmosphere in the heart of the village of Cully. Between renowned artists, a bubbling young jazz scene, Swiss talents and new musical horizons, the programme of the 37th Cully Jazz Festival proves once again the vitality of today's jazz, which is constantly expanding its spectrum, weaving cultures and genres, while staying abreast of the latest trends. From April 5 to 13, 2019, more than 150 concerts will make the heart of Cully beat, from the Chapiteau to the Temple, through the Next Step, to the fifteen or so cafés and wine cellars of the village and the outdoor openjazz scenes.
Among the highlights of this year's edition, Thomas Dutronc will be on stage at the Chapiteau for the second time after a memorable concert in 2014. With his band Les Esprits Manouches, the singer- guitarist lets the mask drop with new poetic songs, without forgetting his biggest swing tubes. Other inevitable reunions in Cully will include: those of Erik Truffaz and his quartet, who will celebrate the twenty years of the legendary album "Bending New Corners" by inviting rapper Nya. The Malian singer Oumou Sangaré is back in the spotlight with "Mogoya", her first album since 2009. On April 5th, for the opening of the Festival, the atmosphere of the Chapiteau promises to be electrifying, before diving, on Wednesday, in an ocean of sweetness brought forth by the clear and delicate voice of Stacey Kent and her wonderful project "I Know I Dream".
Intergenerational encounters
This year, once again, the Festival gives the floor to artists of all generations and fosters encouters in which values of sharing and transmission reign. Thus, virtuoso bassist Stanley Clarke surrounds himself with young talents with relentless funk energy, Rhoda Scott plays alongside Ladies All Star, composed of new rising stars of the French-speaking jazz scene, and the group El Comité, an impromptu reunion of today's best Cuban musicians, invites the legendary guitarist Eliades Ochoa, a member of the Buena Vista Social Club.
Symbols of intergenerational encounters, French pianist Baptiste Trotignon will mingle with the inventive lyricism of renowned clarinettist Michel Portal at the Temple, as pianist Omar Sosa will transfer his vision of the Afro-Cuban musical tradition to young violinist Yilian Cañizares in the Chapiteau.
A new scene with new heights
A true showcase of contemporary jazz, the Next Step reflects the effervescence of the new British scene, from Ezra Collective, a must-see revelation, to saxophonist Nubya Garcia, via Fatima, whose voice is reminiscent of Erykah Badu. And the hip-hop producer turned pianist Alfa Mist, who will offer a lyrical dive into post-jazz. 19-year-old singer Mahalia and the new star of soul Jacob Banks will both perform at the Chapiteau for the closing of the festival. Simply unmissable.
On the side of our french-speaking friends, a new generation of virtuosos has emerged on the jazz scene, starting with violonist Théo Ceccaldi, elected "Revelation of the Year" at the 2017 Victoires du Jazz, which will push the limits of gypsy music at the Temple. The talented Emile Parisien, whose saxophone has already rocked several scenes and wine cellars in Cully before, will present his fabulous quartet at the Chapiteau.
The Swiss scene also has its share of raw talent. The Cully Jazz is proud to welcome Elisa Day, from Bern, and the Shems Bendali quintet, both present at the OFF last year, to tread the boards of the Chapiteau to open for renowned artists. Beloved offspring of the festival, pianists Léo Tardin and Gauthier Toux, will respectively present a solo project, and a revisited album with a string quintet. Talented drummer Julian Sartorius will take the festival-goers on a musical bus journey as part of a new project.
Beyond borders
Whether it's the primal blues of the authentic Sarah McCoy, the hip-hop of Black Milk, Ana Carla Maza's Cuban habanera pop tunes, or the new soundscapes of Manu Delago's hang, jazz takes different forms and never ceases to weave different genres and cultures. This year, Arab music will be sublimated by the Trio Abozekrys and their frenzied performances, through the creation of the students of the HEMU with three musicians from the Maghreb, by the qanun of Maya Youssef or the explosive energy of Yemen Blues. Not to mention the subtle accents of the melodies of AKSHAM, a joint project of Elina Duni, David Enhco and Marc Perrenoud.
OFF Festival
The Club continues to present a panorama of the best current international formations: the new icon of the Turkish scene Gaye Su Akyol, the great Mark De Clive-Lowe who mixes Japanese folk music with jazz, hip-hop or electronica, or soul crooner Joel Culpepper. Among the unmissable DJ nights at the Next Step, the Festival is proud to welcome producer and talent scout Gilles Peterson for a wild set.
Following the inauguration of the outdoor openjazz scenes last year, a new wine cellar will open its doors: Kaffee Lutz. The wine cellar, nestled in the rue du Temple, will showcase solo projects from an effervescent Swiss jazz scene, such as Schlagzeug and Sweet Basile.
