50th Anniversary of Pescara Jazz Festival

Pescara Jazz, Born in 1969 is now half a century old. This festival has embraced artistic research since its origin. 18 concerts scheduled, with a strong accent on the song-form: Starting July 8th ending August 9th, the grand final with Fiorella Mannoia

In schedule, American big as Dee Dee Dee Bridgewater and Joshua Redman as much as italians like Flavio Boltro, Stefano Di Battista, Enrico Pieranunzi. The big surprise will be the young Jacob Collier.

Pescara Jazz - born in 1969, fifty years but not feeling them at all-  presented last May 17th at MIBAC, inside the historical library of Collegio Romano,  is now half a century old and it gets here combining the respect for its bright past and the grit needed to be abreast of the times. This is the mix in which Angelo Valori, artistic director, believes in. The director thanks , with genuine emotion, Lucio Fumo " for the passion and the commitment lavished during decades of direction".

Being one of the most important stages in Europe, Pescara Jazz will inaugurate its fiftieth anniversary on july the 8th with a schedule that includes fifteen consecutive concerts ending on July the 22nd, there will be three additional dates on  July 24th and 28th and August 29th, grand final with Fiorella Mannoia - Personal tour 2019 ( tickets 65, 55 -  46 Euros).

Many "big" on stage:  from American singer Dee Dee Bridgewater (July 19th), to American saxophonist Joshua Redman (July 20th),  to Cameroonian bass player Richard Bona  (july 17th), to guitarist Robben Ford (July 11th together with Lorenzo Tucci's trio, feat. Karima. Tickets 34,50 - 28,75 - 18 Euros). The calendar also includes the concert Una noche por Paco  with Antonio Sanchez sextet and the Chano Dominguez flamenco quartet (July 13th. Tickets 35,30 and 25 Euros).

But the true surprise of this festival's edition is Jacob Collier (July 21st). Singer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, contemporary jazz phenomenon and revelation, You Tube celebrity, Quincy Jones's ( legendary producer of Michael Jackson) protégé.

" As you can deduce from the program,  particular attention has been given to songs" - states the artistic director Angelo Valori -. As a matter of fact, while retaining the more traditionally jazz part , the festival widens with the new section Pescara Jazz & Songs which focuses on the song - form  as a communication and innovation tool of the languages , of the traditions and the history of a society.

This also explains the presence, on the billboard, of other outstanding names such as Giuseppe Anastasi assigned, last year, with the Tenco Prize for the best first work with his album Canzoni ravvicinate del vecchio tipo, ( July 8th, opening concert. Tickets 15 - 10 Euros) and Bungaro, guest at SanRemo Festival several times, in Pescara with Maredentro tour (July 10th. Tickets 15 - 10 Euros).

Many Italian Jazz players are also involved : Bepi D'Amato and Tony Pancella ( July 22nd. Tickets 15 - 10 Euros), Flavio Boltro and Stefano Di Battista feat. in Maurizio Rolli's  band Rolli's Tones II (same day) and Ada Montellanico quartet (Juli 9th), whose concert Tencology, proposes many songs of Tenco's repertoir plus some unpublished songs rearranged  in jazz style (tickets 15 and 10 Euros).

And again, this year : Pescara Jazz Club ( July 14th, 15th,16th) and Pescara Jazz Messengers. Two choices that aim to update the Festival. The first is about introducing the festival to a greater audience, presenting three free concerts in the heart of the town; the scene will be set along the beautiful pedestrian area Piazza Muzii. The second is about giving value to musicians that are below 35 years old, which aligns with the European trend that pays particular attention to the generational turnover. As a matter of fact, the Pescara Jazz Messengers project presents young musicians, chosen among students and newly graduated in the best conservatories and European colleges. Among them the Luisa D'Annunzio Conservatory of Pescara. There will also be a new project that will start in september: in cooperation with the newborn association Jazz goes to school.

It's also worth noting the attention that Angelo Valori continues to give to symphonic productions and that this year sees on the stage the Orchestra Sinfonica Abruzzese with Michele Corcella and Enrico Pierannunzi's Trio, in an original production ( John Lewis's  music arranged by Corcella, July 18th).

In the context of the initiatives organized for the fiftieth anniversary there's also the publication of a celebrative photographical book, embellished by the greetings of  Ted Gioia ( world's biggest jazz historian) , Jan Ole Otnaes (Europe jazz Network President), Corrado Beldì ( I-Jazz Pesident), Paolo Fresu (President of Il Jazz Italiano national federation).

Last but not least, also this year Pescara Jazz will be part of the PeFest, an inter disciplinary playbill which is recording flattering results, In continuous growth, with a 20% increase of takings and paying public.
