“The freshest, hottest sounds in jazz and contemporary experimental music.”
The Irish Times
“Four dizzyingly diverse international triple-bills...a splendidly challenging festival" Jazzwise UK
Improvised Music Company, the Dublin based producers of 12 Points Festival, today announce that the 2016 edition of 12 Points will take place from 20-23rd of July in the vibrant Basque city of San Sebastian (Donostia) in Northern Spain, in association with Donostia Kultura.
The Irish-made, 4-day festival is uniquely nomadic - alternating between Dublin and other exciting young European cities on alternate years. Recent ‘away’ editions include the 2014 festival in Umeå, Sweden and 2012 in Porto, Portugal.
This 10th edition of the award-winning 12 Points festival will run concurrently with Jazzaldia, Europe’s longest, continuously running Jazz Festival, which will broaden the audiences for our chosen 12 artists and frame their music in the context of a bigger jazz programme. San Sebastián also holds the title of the 2016 European Capital of Culture, alongside Wroklow, Poland.
Speaking of the 2016 location, artistic director, Kenneth Killeen, said he was excited by the prospect of presenting the 10th edition of the festival to the ‘donostiarra’ in one of Spain’s richest cultural hubs, this time in association with the 50 year old Jazzaldia Festival and Donostia Kultura, which marks another positive step in 12 Points cross- cultural artistic collaboration.
Being part of Jazzaldia gives 12 Points a great opportunity to both expand its audience base and develop its Jazz Futures programme, the 2 day conference that runs in association with 12 Points.
Miguel Martín, Director of Heineken Jazzaldia Festival said of the collaboration; “The Heineken Jazzaldia Festival is committed to innovation and supporting new talents, which is very much in line with the objectives of 12 Points Festival. After celebrating our Fiftieth Anniversary in 2015 with great artistic success and record audience numbers (124,000 spectators), the Festival is preparing this special programme to contribute to the San Sebastian European Capital of Culture 2016”
12 Points festival is programmed each year by an open-call across the continent, and the search is now on for 12 acts from 12 different European countries for the 2016 edition. Almost 500 young musicians have performed at 12 Points since 2007, the festival seen as a ‘mezzanine’ for promising acts on their way to the next level in their careers.
“One of the best experiences an artist can have on a festival.” - Lander Gyselinck (artist 2014)
Over the last 10 years, 12 Points has become an important platform for emerging European jazz talent, and a fantastic resource for some of Europe’s top jazz festival bookers and music media to find exciting new talent: “Events like this make the difference for the bands and musicians, and are an important source for programmers and other professionals.” - Frank Bolder, North Sea Jazz Festival
