Bungul
The Australian Art Orchestra explores the meeting points between disciplines and cultures—imagining new musical forms to reflect the energy and diversity of 21st-century Australia, with a focus on improvisation.
On June 9 and 10, Berlin’s Pierre Boulez Saal welcomes the group for a mini-residency of two different programs developed together with Daniel and David Wilfred, who represent the 40,000-year-old Yolgnu song tradition of Northern Australia.
Hand to Earth is a collaboration between Daniel Wilfred and Sunny Kim, one of Korea’s most sought-after jazz vocalists. Against a backdrop created by trumpeter-composer Peter Knight, David Wilfred on didgeridoo, and Aviva Endean on clarinet, they sing of timeless things—from the stars to fire to the cooling rain.
The Australian Art Orchestra’s second concert brings Yolgnu culture to life with a recreation of a traditional Bungul, a meeting of people who come together to sing, play, and dance. For this one-of-a-kind experience, the Hand to Earth ensemble is joined by Norwegian percussionist Ingar Zach and Australian cellist Judith Hamann.

Breath & Hammer
June 15 – 17 | 7.30 PM
Breath & Hammer, the audiovisual concert project created by clarinetist David Krakauer and pianist Kathleen Tagg together with video artist Jesse Gilbert, returns to the Pierre Boulez Saal in a revised and expanded version for three nights only this June. Performed in a hexagonal, transparent “room within a room,” the program—which combines music from a wide variety of genres with original compositions, electronic sounds, and interactive video projections—is an extraordinary, immersive audiovisual concert experience. It was first seen at the Pierre Boulez Saal in March 2019.
