Bærum Jazz Festival 2023 repeats last year's success and expands the program
The very first Bærum Jazz Festival was a success: amazing concerts, good ticket sales, diverse venues, and an enthusiastic audience. On June 1st, this year's festival program will be launched.
"The success of 2023 must be repeated. From Wednesday, November 1st, to Sunday, November 5th, the audience can experience a wealth of internationally renowned artists, local heroes, and up-and-coming young Norwegian jazz performers. Bærum Jazz Festival 2023 is not only a celebration of jazz music but also an opportunity to discover exciting collaborations between jazz and dance," explains festival director Kai Gustavsen.
A total of 30 concerts and events will take place at eight different venues in Bærum (near Oslo) over five days: November 1st to 5th.
Festival Highlights of the Year
There will be many great experiences. The festival director's selection includes the following 10 concerts:
1. Opening concert on Wednesday, November 1st: Marius Neset and the London Sinfonietta perform the BBC Proms hit "Geysir."
2. Hiromi's Sonicwonder, led by the incredible Japanese pianist Hiromi, brings their fantastic international quartet and combines technical brilliance and creativity.
3. Dirty Loops, the YouTube phenomenon that offers a unique and catchy blend of funk, pop, jazz, and R&B, always delivering an abundance of joy.
4. Jazz Sabbath, the British band that interprets songs from the legendary heavy metal band Black Sabbath in their own unique and exciting way. Their creative approach to the music adds a whole new dimension to these iconic songs.
5. Laila Biali, award-winning Canadian singer, songwriter, pianist, and radio host, captivates the audience with her versatile voice and genre-crossing musical style. Her captivating songs offer a blend of jazz and pop.
6. Jazzanova, the German music collective known for exploring various genres such as funk, jazz, disco, and Latin, will provide an unforgettable experience. Their unique musical blend is characterized as an explosion of danceable rhythms.
7. Trondheim Jazz Orchestra GURLS: Big band energy, soul, improvisation, and acoustic hip-hop – vibrant, humorous, and musically surprising. The collaboration secured awards and energized tours.
8. Lullaby of the Sea: Tender and beautiful lullaby duets in Norwegian and Persian when Solveig Slettahjell and Iranian Mahsa Vahdat perform duets based on lullaby motifs with new and classic lyrics. Providing the musical accompaniment to the lyrics are Tord Gustavsen (piano and electronics) and Sjur Miljeteig (trumpet and electronics). Here, we get Iranian poetry and Norwegian folk tunes in a highly successful fusion.
9. Martin Horntveth Polaroid: Genre-crossing, musical reflections, and future visions as Martin Horntveth gathers a stellar lineup to perform the commissioned work from the 2021 Kongsberg Jazz Festival: Polaroid.
10. Stian Carstensen Musical Sanatorium: Musical recovery on a grand scale for the acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and composer. Closing concert on Sunday, November 5th.
