As part of the Tomorrow’s Warriors x Decca Records Career Mentoring Scheme, launched in September 2023 (read more), fourteen young jazz musicians visited Universal Music UK’s recording studio at the company HQ in King’s Cross, London.
Between the 11th and 19th January, the programme participants were given the opportunity of a four-hour recording session with Universal’s engineer, Gonzalo Barrera, and the freedom to bring their own creativity and choice of project to the studio.
“It’s a truism in the music industry that, in the studio, ‘time is money’ – so understanding what it means to be ‘studio ready’ is a key part of a young musician’s career development. We are so grateful to Decca for this fantastic opportunity and are excited to hear the recordings.” Tomorrow’s Warriors Co-Founder Janine Irons OBE
Every musician bought their own vision and creative goal to the sessions; from recording a promo video with an accompanying audio track for an upcoming album, to recording a new EP, laying down demo tracks or recording overdubs for existing tunes, each of these emerging artists put their own stamp on their studio time.
“Having spent time mentoring this group of young Warriors over the last four or five months, we knew that they would bring all the creativity, passion, and talent with them. But they also came so prepared and had an incredible focus and work ethic. Each artist arrived with a clear plan of what they wanted to achieve, and every session was packed with incredible music – it was inspiring to watch and listen to what they could each accomplish in just one four-hour slot.” Charis Richards, A&R, Decca Records
