An international outfit that comes across with many facets but still has a cohesive sound. There is more to it than just a high academic level of musicianship.

Karin Krog «The Many Faces of Karin Krog» (Odin)

Lars Mossefinn comments:
Karin Krog celebrates her 80th anniversary by releasing this 6 CD-box. Some of these recordings go back to 1967 (with Don Ellis) and the newest is done in February 2017. The box documents that Krog has been a truly original voice in international jazz for 50 years.

Paweł Brodowski comments:
An intriguing concept album by a septet of young Polish musicians, reimagining Krzysztof Komeda’s compositions from 1962 – 1967, drawn from feature movies and short films, his ballet etudes and music accompanying the poems by great Polish poets. EABS stands for Electro-Acoustic Beat Session.
These innovative interpretations employ contemporary tools, samples, loopes, hip-hop, jungle and funk rhythms. One piece features a guest appearance by violinist Michał Urbaniak, a one-time member of the legendary Komeda Quintet. The album, released on CD and vinyl, includes a comprehensive 40-page booklet in English.

I’d like to select a great new album by an emerging four piece from the UK – one of the best albums I’ve heard this year.

Anna Filipieva, Jazz.Ru (Russia):

The Firebirds «Aladdin’s Dream» (ILK)

listen on SoundCloud | listen on Yandex.Music | listen on Spotify (registration required) | buy on label’s website

Anna Filipieva comments:
An organ trio from Denmark, originally assembled by the fierce drummer Stefan Pasborg to perform music by Igor Stravinsky (hence the band’s name, after Stravinsky’s famous 1910 ballet score.) On the new album, the Firebirds offer energetic, groovy versions of the themes written by Danish classical composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931.)

COVER
Henning Bolte, Jazzism (Netherlands):

Hoera «Beestentijd» (Granvat)

one track on YouTube | album trailer on BandCamp | album teaser on SoundCloud | album on the label’s website

Henning Bolte comments:
Belgian trio from the inventious Antwerp scene. Bert Cools (g), Stijn Cools (dr) and Dries Laheye (b) create music in between songs and film music, jazz and soundscape. Music of an initimate mood emerging from improvisational elaborations of open compositions. Presented in a unique puzzle box.
