The Festa do Jazz - Portuguese Jazz Fest is a festival organized by the Association Sons da Lusofonia and the São Luiz Municipal Theatre, held by the Lisbon City Hall. This event had its first edition in 2003 and it has always been dedicated to the Portuguese jazz musicians. However, some of the groups also include artists from abroad invited by the local musicians to be part of their projects. Apart from that the festival established international partnerships with the aim to invite internationally acclaimed musicians to be part of Portuguese Jazz Fest as artists in residence who work closely with the local participants, for example in form of workshops.
The Festa do Jazz takes place at São Luiz Theatre in Lisbon in 3 different stages of this venue. During 3 days (Friday to Sunday) there are more than 30 concerts, 2 masterclasses (with this year’s international guests Leo Genovese and Tony Malaby) as well as the presentation of this year’s artist in residence, the german composer Rainer Tempel. Another programme highlight - which is unique in the world of jazz – is the national jazz school contest with 15 bands from all over Portugal, representing their music schools as their best jazz combos.
