Sunday May 4
On National Remembrance Day of the Second World War in the Netherlands, LantarenVenster presents a special film concert: Parallel Truths. The Alma Quartet performs live music alongside footage from Triumph des Willens (1935), Leni Riefenstahl’s controversial propaganda film for Hitler’s NSDAP. The concert highlights the power of propaganda and the dangers of one-sided information.
The film depicts Hitler and his party leaders at the 1934 NSDAP rally, mobilizing 360,000 people. The German youth, trapped in a hopeless situation, are indoctrinated and prepared for Total War.
In contrast to these images, the Alma Quartet performs String Quartet No. 3 by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, a Jewish composer who fled the Nazis, and String Quartet No. 8 by Dmitri Shostakovich, who suffered under Stalin’s regime. Their music reflects the victims of dictatorships and World War II.
The Alma Quartet, composed of members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, is renowned for its expressive playing and innovative approach, bringing this intense dual experience to life.
