Anniversaries and celebrations

Whilst anniversary or birthday tributes rarely feature prominently at hcmf//, this year we proudly honour several artists whose own histories have been entwined with the development of the Festival and who continue to have a major influence on contemporary and experimental music.

The renowned Arditti Quartet first appeared at the Festival in 1982, and we celebrate their 40th anniversary this year with a special concert featuring the world premiere of a new work written for the group by Marco Stroppa. This year's opening concert pays tribute to Christian Wolff in his 80th birthday year and features a first appearance at hcmf// for Ostravská banda under the direction of Petr Kotík - while Evan Parker, irrepressible in his 70th year, presents three new projects ranging from a concert-length work to three short pieces and a DJ set!

Our Composer in Residence is James Dillon. Unquestionably one of the UK's greatest composers, Dillon has remained a Festival favourite since winning the Young Composer's Award in 1978. His treatment of the Stabat Mater Dolorosa for the London Sinfonietta and BBC Singers will be a major highlight of our opening weekend, as will the world premiere of his orchestral work Physis I & II on Saturday 29 November.

New voices continue to be the lifeblood of hcmf//, and this year we have commissioned important new works from Larry Goves, Alexander Schubert and Pedro Álvarez, whilst the renowned hcmf// shorts programme presents an entire day of free music on Monday 24 November.
