It is always our great pleasure welcoming the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra to perform at Oslo Jazzfestival. This year they are teaming up with the remarkable pianist and composer Jason Moran. The outstanding pianist and composer was last seen at Oslo Jazzfestical back in 2014 at Victoria National Jazzscene. At this year’s festival you have the opportunity to experience him solo on Wednesday August 17th and with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra Thursday August 18th, both concerts at MUNCH.
Jason Moran has been one of USAs prominent jazz musicians over the past 20 years. Not only through his work with the iconic trio The Bandwagon, but also as a pioneer, composer, curator and artist. Moran’s performances with Cassandra Wilson, Charles Lloyd, and the late Sam Rivers reveal the scope of Moran’s partnerships and music-making. He’s also worked with visual artists Adrian Piper, Joan Jonas, Glenn Ligon, Adam Pendleton, Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker, Stan Douglas, and others and has had exhibitions at MOMA and The Whitney Museum.
Trondheim Jazz Orchestra has, since the 2000s, held a position as one of Norway’s and Europe’s leading ensembles for improvised music. They’ve collaborated with international musicians such as Joshua Redman, Anna Webber and Chick Corea. Not to mention the numerous young Norwegian composers such as Eirik Hegdal, Anja Lauvdal, Heida Mobeck, Erlend Skomvoll and Signe Emmeluth.
Ole Morten Vågan is one of Norways most active bass players and musicians. He has been working with TJO since 2002, and has served as creative director since 2017. Vågan and Jason Moran collaborated for the first time back in 2013 – when Moran was AIR on Molde. At this year’s festival Vågan has arranged Morans music for a remarkable set of musicians, handpicked for the occasion.
