We’re about to take off. Jazz in Ruins will be held for the 18th time, so we’re becoming an adult :)
In this year we have quite a few surprises for you. Let's start with the deadlines, we operate in the second half of August. And this year under the slogan "Make Jazz Not War", because this is the title of the poster and graphics exhibition organized as part of the festival. Let's be together in those strange times. There is a magic force in art ... you know, Earth without art is just “Eh”.
Jazz in Ruins 2022, so what, where and when
Well, we’ll be waiting for you on 19th, 20th and 26th, 27th of August in the mysterious and beautiful, over 150-year-old GZUT Model Hall (Wincentego Pola st. no 7-13, Gliwice). By the way, it is very easy to reach us by car, by bike (from the side of the Silesian University of Technology and the Chrobry Park). And of course, there is lots of place to leave the vehicle (free parking lots).
Two concerts every day, the first at 7.00 p.m., the second at 9.00 p.m. Plus additional attractions such as youth concerts, artistic happenings, etc. As part of the exhibition, we are also planning multimedia presentations and performances. We also guarantee a buffet corner, where you will be able to cool down a bit and feed your body and soul.
Make Jazz Not War
For those who would like to try their hand at being a graphic designer - works for the exhibition can be submitted via the website
https://jazzwruinach.pl/rejestracja
The jury, under the supervision of the curator, will evaluate and select the works for the exhibition. Let us add that after the exhibition, a special catalog of the qualified works will be created and published. What’s more, the exhibition will also have its version online, i.e. all works that will be qualified for the exhibition will appear in a specially prepared online formula, divided into categories, etc. Maybe just as a reminder, this is what the online exhibition looked like last year, with nearly 600 works from 38 countries.

We’re aiming at breaking this record this year.
In the context of visual arts - the concerts will be accompanied by visualizations prepared especially for the festival.
Concerts
What are we proposing this year in the music part of the festival? Here is the concert program of the 18th edition of the Jazz in Ruins festival.

Maciej Kądziela tribute to ZK Collaboration
A band born out of destiny and friendship. It just had to happen. It’s just a group of friends. Some of them sat together at school desks, studied together, traveled together, made music, drawing from youthful energy and the extraordinary interaction they had developed over the years.
Maciej Kądziela is a jazz saxophonist, which makes him more or less heir to the great American masters, that's clear. But he comes from Opoczno and is not indifferent to the folk musical traditions of his native lands. Added to this is a European, and especially Scandinavian, view of improvised music and definitely more than a pinch of free-jazz disorder. Most importantly - he is able to integrate all these influences and transform them into his own artistic personality.
Maciej Kądziela – sax
Mateusz Gawęda – piano
Roman Chraniuk – doublebass
Gniewomir Tomczyk - drums
19.08.2022 / 9.00 p.m.
Gniewomir Tomczyk Quartet
Jazz, electronics, improvisation, space ... This is what describes the newly formed formation in the world of jazz music. Strongly electrifying line-up on the Polish music scene: Grzech Piotrowski, Jan Smoczyński, Krzysztof Gradziuk and Gniewomir Tomczyk. Very colorful improvisations, a combination of acoustic and electronic instruments is the domain of musicians.
20.08.2022 / 7.00 p.m.
Marcin Pater Trio
The unique trio will take us on a musical journey. The band's music is primarily the leader's own compositions that reflect the emotions accompanying his memories, thus Pater creates a musical journey through his very personal experiences. Currently, the band is just before the release of their second album titled "Between", created in cooperation with the icon of Polish jazz music - Leszek Możdżer.
Marcin Pater – vib.
Mateusz Szewczyk – doublebass
Adam Wajdzik – drums

Sam Levin Trio
They were connected by a pandemic reality and love for music. Sam Levin left Brooklyn, New York at the beginning of the pandemic and moved to Tychy, Osiedle B, also known as Brooklyn, for Sam, the second. From one Brooklyn to another, Sam felt right at home. He didn't know any musicians in Poland when he arrived but he started hanging around the jam sessions in Katowice and Krakow and soon met many musicians from Silesia and Poland generally. It was at one of those jam sessions that Sam and Mateusz Szewczyk played together for the first time. Mateusz brought in his longtime musical colleague Kuba Mizeracki, and the Drugi Brooklyn trio was born.
Sam Levin - drums
Mateusz Szewczyk – kontrabas
Jakub Mizeracki – guitar

Adam Jarzmik Quintet
Freshness and lightness on the Polish jazz scene. In the leader’s compositions, inspired by the music of jazz giants such as Brad Mehldau, Aaron Parks or Aaron Goldberg, he is a breath of fresh air on the Polish jazz scene. In 2017, the band's first, debut album entitled "Euphoria" was released by the "Audio Cave" label. The next, second album "Live at Radio Katowice" was released in the summer a few months later in cooperation with the JazzForum magazine. The band recorded the third author's album "On The Way Home" with the world-famous guitarist Mike Moreno.

Marcin Elszkowski – trumpet
Maciej Kitajewski – doublebass
Piotr Budniak - drums

Marcelina Gawron Quintet feat. Piotr Schmidt
A penetrating, vivid voice that blends wonderfully with any instrument. What a gift! - that's what they say about her. Marcelina will perform with a quartet of great musicians from the Polish jazz scene in the company of the outstanding Polish jazz trumpeter - Piotr Schmidt. The program includes original songs from the album "Notes of life" arranged by Adam Jarzmik, who will also play the piano.

Sketchbook Quartet
The phenomenon of the Austrian music scene. When postmodern chamber jazz meets… rock. When listening to SKETCHBOOK QUARTET, the element of surprise inevitably arises. Oh, that's how jazz can’t sound! The experimental music of the Quartet of Friends from Vienna has little to do with jazz in the classical or traditional sense of it. Not only is the Sketchbook Quartet line-up quite unconventional, but the music and sound is also quite unusual, specific and unusual for the genre.
Leonhard Skorupa - Reeds, composition
Andi Tausch – guitar
Oscar Antoli - bass clarinet, FX
Hubert Bründlmayer - drums
27.08.2022 / 9.00 p.m.
Michał Salamon Trio
A feast for fans of the Lion's Gate album. It is a very romantic and spatial musical event, in this case supplemented with a series of sounds created jointly by Michał, Miłosz Skwirut and Dawid Fortuna. So let's expect some musical surprises and new versions of the artist's works.
Last but no least ...
The program also includes several happenings and performances specially prepared for the festival, mixing different genres of arts, from of music, dance theatre and visual arts. However, we don't want to reveal everything that easily. You just have to come over.
And the most important thing. Admission to all events is free.
