Across 10 headline events this Autumn Turner Sims presents some of the best new British jazz, alongside pioneering European artists and legendary American performers.
Two jazz ‘supergroups’ head the Autumn jazz season line-up. Anglo-American quintet The Impossible Gentlemen return with material from their new album Let’s Get Deluxe, whilst all-American band The Cookers give one of only four UK performances at Turner Sims in November. Their line-up includes renowned names trumpeter Eddie Henderson, saxophonist Billy Harper and bassist Cecil McBee.
A member of a legendary line-up of more recent jazz vintage is Magnus Öström. The former e.s.t. drummer brings his band to Turner Sims for a special one-off UK gig in January performing music from his latest album Parachute.
British trio GoGo Penguin return to Turner Sims in November following their sell-out debut gig in 2015, whilst another artist making waves is multi-award-winning, BBC New Generation Artist trumpeter and composer Laura Jurd. Born in Hampshire, she makes her Turner Sims debut as a headlining artist in January with her group Dinosaur.
Pianists are to the fore in two concerts; Sean Foran opens the series, stepping away temporarily from his work with trio Trichotomy to debut a new all-British band which includes saxophonist James Mainwaring and guitarist Stuart McCallum. More keyboard-led exploits come from returning favourites the Neil Cowley Trio who showcase music from their new release Spacebound Apes.
Last but not least, three special collaborations, each on a different scale, feature in the series. Femi Temowo’s new project Music is the Feeling, which comes to Turner Sims in October, combines the guitarist’s trio with a quartet of strings from London collective Engines Orchestra. Meanwhile explosive saxophonist Marius Neset returns to Turner Sims with his quartet, but is joined by the 19-piece London Sinfonietta to perform material from his album Snowmelt. A more intimate affair comes from two great British singers; Ian Shaw and Claire Martin present their Christmas Cracker on Thursday 8 December, a perfect treat for the festive season.
