It’s with great pleasure we invite you to take part of the 60th edition of Molde International Jazz Festival! As some of you might know we had some quite spectacular plans to celebrate this anniversary festival. We had in line John Zorn as Arist In Residence with eight amazing projects, Herbie Hancock was on his way and so was Charles Lloyd, Cecilé McLorin Salvant, Out of Land, Joel Ross, Makaya McCraven, Kurt Elling & Danilo Perez and many many others. As you know, it all changed late this winter due to the spread of Covid 19. For a long time we thought for sure that we would have to cancel or postphone in the same way that many other festivals had to.
On International Jazz Day, April 30th, the norwegian government provided us a ray of hope by allowing gatherings of 50 people starting May 7th with a possible rise to 200 starting June 15th. Being an «old-fashioned» festival with all hard ticketed shows, normally around 60 at 11 different venues this gave us an opportunity to make a festival even with the healthcare limitations taken in consideration. After 4 weeks of hard work we could on May 28th announce «the downscaled anniversary festival» with 35 concerts at 4 different venues – with the undisputed queen of the norwegian jazz scene, Karin Krog, as Artist in Residence. She was a part of the lineup of the very first festival in 1961!
The really good thing about this is that we are able to provide work for more than 200 musicians, quite a few suppliers of technique and sound-equipment as well as restaurant, bars and so on. As you all know the wide economic impacts a festival have are countless. We are also very happy that by making this festival we will see many of our commision works and special productions for this year come to life. And this is also what we would like to share with you!
