11.12.13. november 2016
2016 is an anniversary year for music unlimited: the festival celebrates its 30th edition. For this reason, musicians from sixteen nations will gather in Wels/Austria on the weekend from November 11th to November 13th. Together with an equally international audience, they will follow their common idea of cultivating the art of listening in genre-bending musical journeys.
With enthusiasm, passion and deep conviction the festival team works year after year to bring new developments in contemporary music to Austria. The festival presents a broad range of styles from rock to jazz, from free jazz to improvisation, from new forms of European art music to traditional sounds. The film-maker Siegfried Fruehauf once summed up the spirit of the festival accurately by stating: “The promoters look beyond the horizon of the well-known, because they want to reach what is over and above possible.“
The 30th edition of music unlimited literally offers “world music”. Artists from all five continents will present their diverse approaches to creating and processing sound on five stages across town. However, any anniversary also affords an opportunity to look back: Since 1991, the program of every other festival edition has been arranged by an internationally renowned musician. This year, many of these former curators will present their current work in new, often unheard projects. Also, performers who played at the first ever festival edition in 1987 can be found on the line-up: Guitarist Gunter Schneider will play with his new ensemble Zimt; the Amsterdam String Trio around cellist Ernst Reijseger will play with the same cast as they did 29 years ago.
The creative tension between continuity and innovation remains crucial for the 30th anniversary edition.
