From 6th to 9th of April, Riga Jazz Stage 2016 will take place at cinema “Splendid Palace” and “Daile” music hall. This year 28 young jazz artists from 17 countries: Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Hungary, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine, Russia, Uzbekistan, France, United Kingdom, Italy and USA are going to participate in the contest. Initially 39 musicians submitted their applications to participate in contest in the categories of “Jazz Vocal” and “Jazz Trombone”.
The finalists are: vocalists Lori van Gremberghe (Belgium), Erik Leuthauser (Germany), Laura Lenhardt (Germany), Elīza Baķe (Latvia), Kristīne Liede (Latvija), Līva Dumpe (Latvia), Aušra Paliuše (Lithuania), Dorota Zydaglo (Poland), Kinga Pruš (Poland), Sofia Atsbeha-Negga (Russia), Svitlana Varava (Slovenia), Jessica Radcliffe (UK), Anastasia Ryseff (USA), Lauren Lee (USA), Sabina Mustaeva (Uzbekistan), Jana Kutt (Estonia), Laura Marti (Ukraine) and trombonists Simon Kintopp (Austria), Robinson Khoury (France), Matyas Papp (Hungary), Federico Pierantoni (Italy), Nauris Strežs (Latvia), Denis Starchenko (Russia), Polina Tarasenko (Ukraine), Burak Dursun (Turkey), Robbie Harvey (UK) and Owen Dawson (UK). Latvia will be represented by three vocalists - Līva Dumpe, Kristīne Liede and Elīza Baķe, and trombonist – Nauris Strežs.
All vocalists are currently studying jazz vocal at Riga Dome Choral School, and Nauris Strežs is a musician in Latvian Radio Big Band. United Kingdom, Poland, Germany and jazz tradition rich USA showed a great interest this year as well. For the first time of the contests’ history jazz musicians from Italy, Uzbekistan and France are participating in Riga Jazz Stage!
The contest’s international jury consists of Maestro Raimonds Pauls, producer Māris Briežkalns, Latvian Music Academy Rector Artis Sīmanis, trombonist Jiggs Whigham (Germany/USA), jazz club “Ronnie Scott’s” representative – Paul Pace (UK), jazz club “Nardis Jazz” director – Onder Focan (Turkey), contest “Jazz Voices” director – Steponas Januška (Lithuania), and American jazz vocalists and pedagogue Charenee Wade! The prize found consists of more than 6000 EUR, as well as the invitations to participate in festivals and concerts in Latvia and abroad.
International Jazz Artist Contest Riga Jazz Stage 2016 concerts will take place at cinema “Splendid Palace” on three dates – 7th of April – Contests’ Finale, 8th of April – Super Finale, 9th of April – Award ceremony, laureates performances, as for the second part of the evening – Charenee Wade quartet concert.
