Roger Correa Quartet showcasing in Jazzahead 2025

PRESS RELEASE ROGER CORREA

LATINO IBÉRICO

The second album by composer and accordionist Roger Correa, Latino Ibérico, was published on the streaming platforms on July 2024. His exuberant composition understands Brazilian culture as part of a process of Latin American cultural identity, highlighting the shared roots and musical heritage, the result of the union of original, enslaved and Iberian peoples that structured both Brazilian and the South American continent. Brazilian southern music dialogues fluently with these roots, developing its own accents in styles such as milonga, chamamé, chacarera, candombe, tango, salsa, choro and many others.

Latino Ibérico aims to establish a deep connection between these cultural elements, experimenting with new musical possibilities through a universal aesthetic that is Jazz, valuing composition, improvisation and researching new styles and fusions.

Latino Ibérico also highlights the protagonism of an unusual instrument with this kind of band (a jazz trio). The gaita-ponto (diatonic button accordion instead of keys) has always been more associated with folk traditions and the agrarian environment, while the key accordion was more easily incorporated into the urban setting and formal teaching in conservatories.

The first single Guaíba, the album's opening track, was released in 2023 with the mission of demarcating the cosmopolitan aspect of Latino Ibérico, taking as its title the hometown where the musician from Rio Grande do Sul was born and raised. Before the entire album release entirety, the track Minuaneiro will be the second single, available on platforms from June 14th. The title of the track comes from "minuano", a sharp wind of polar origin that rips through the entire south of Brazil, as suggested by the energetic atmosphere of this track, which refers to passage, displacement and agility.
