Morton Feldman – Five Pianos – TivoliVredenbrug Grote Zaal
Feldman himself about this work: “Five Pianos began by finding myself humming tones while improvising on the piano. The vocal or humming sounds were quite short, and as the piano sounds lingered, I began to hear other pianos, other humming. Two, three, four pianos were too transparent – the fifth piano became like the pedal blur needed to complete the overall sound I was after.”
Feldman’s compositions don’t impose themselves on you, and they refuse to shout about their meaning or importance. They also resist your attempts to predict what might happen next. His music is full of repetition, and yet nothing ever repeats. Individual chords, textures and rhythmic ideas reoccur, but they are never (or very rarely) the same. Patterns don’t progress in a predictable way, which makes Feldman’s aesthetic radically different from minimalists such as Steve Reich or Philip Glass. Feldman’s music is tranquil and dreamlike, above all Five Pianos.

Othin Spake – ACU
Othin Spake started as a joke. Put together by Teun Verbruggen, who got “carte blanche” in Brussels. Teun decided to play a complete Improvised session with the eccentric guitar player Mauro Pawlowski (dEUS) and Fender-Rhodes player Jozef Dumoulin (Magic Malik).
This first session (on a lousy, rainy Sunday afternoon) turned into a complete musical party going from very rough soundscaping, to punk, minimal electronic and Jazz.
It was an unbelievable event with very fresh, innovating music from three musicians who never played together before. They immediately became one of the most discussed bands …. “This is no Jazz!!!!!!”
They’re not playing pure Jazz but they call their music “emofreejazznoizesweetpunk” which comes close to what they’re bringing. Every concert is a complete discovery and a fully improvised set … so worth checking out!!
Teun Verbruggen – drums; Jozef Dumoulin – fender rhodes; Mauro Pawlowski – guitar
Lucas Niggli & Andreas Schaerer – RASA
These two cosmopolitan musicians show no reluctance to create any imaginable sounding worlds. The vocal virtuoso Schaerer has a tremendous range of expression, from classical singing to yodel and overtone sounds he can do pretty much everything imaginable with his voice. Lucas Niggli is one of the most versatile drummers in Europe. Their imagination and communication skills are the key to a free, yet very precise improvisational kind of music that knows no dogmatic boundaries. The result is a virtuoso, naked and yet opulent-sounding music with two archaic musical instruments: voice and drums. A versatile, highly agile performance which goes under the skin.
Lucas Niggli – drums; Andreas Schaerer – voice
