As reported previously our (much younger) sister organisation – the European Folk Network (EFN)- secured funding from the European Music Council’s MusicAIRE programme to underwrite the first ever celebratory European Folk Day, scheduled for 23 September 2003.
Preparations for the European Folk Day are now well underway and anyone planning a folk music – or folk-related – event on or around 23 September can submit details on the new European Folk Day website https://www.europeanfolkday.eu. The website will display all of the participating organisations and artists with links to their activities and will also show their location on map of Europe. Individual artists with folk or folk-related compositions can also submit a favourite piece to add to the repository of music on the website.
EFN is led by former EJN President and Honorary Member Nod Knowles, who reminded us that EFN is modelled in part on the success of EJN and that so many EJN members, like him, are also involved in the promotion of various forms of folk and traditional music. So, too, are many jazz musicians – showcases at European Jazz Conferences in Estonia and Bulgaria were just two very clear examples of that cross-fertilisation.
