On the 6th of September 2015 the biggest event in the history of Italian jazz will take place in the city of L’Aquila, with 600 artists performing in 100 shows over only 12 hours to support the reconstruction of the city that was almost totally destroyed by a huge earthquake in 2009.
The idea for the event started from Dario Franceschini, Italian Minister of Culture, Massimo Cialente, Mayor of the city of L’Aquila, and Paolo Fresu, world-renowned trumpet player and Artistic Director, with the support of the Italian Society of Authors and Editors (SIAE) and Puglia sounds.
The 6th of September will be a musical marathon beginning at 12.00 in the morning and continuing until the night, with events happening in 20 locations all around the city centre, that was heavily damaged by the earthquake and still is far from being reconstructed. A musical path will start from the 16th century fortress and then spread out in the streets, squares, churches, cloisters, and other iconic locations of the city centre where artists will perform, both indoors and outside. The culminating event will take place in the central square from 20.00 in the evening where the most famous Italian jazz musicians will perform in front of the public and the media in order to reinforce the message of the event.
Ranging from the most famous jazz groups to big bands, original solos, music schools' ensembles and Festival's and regional's projects, including a big number of young talents, the answer of the Italian jazz community to the call of the organisers was unanimously positive. A special part of the event's programme will be addressed to kids and young audiences. The event is an incredible occasion to witness the state of the art of jazz and related styles in Italy at the moment.
The first names to answer the call from Minister Franceschini, Mayor Cialente and Paolo Fresu were Enrico Rava, Danilo Rea, Enrico Pieranunzi, Franco D’Andrea, Antonello Salis, Gianni Coscia, Gianluigi Trovesi, Maria Pia de Vito, Gianluca Petrella, Roberto Gatto, Rosario Giuliani, Rita Marcotulli, Stefano Battaglia, Paolo Damiani, Javier Girotto, Pietro Tonolo, Tiziana Ghiglioni, Ada Montellanico and Gino Paoli, but immediately after them hundreds of other musicians coming from all over the country gave their availability to perform in order to support this cause, without any fee.
The coordination of the event is done by I-Jazz (the network of Italian jazz Festivals and Projects), with the support of SIAE and Puglia Sounds, together with the Association of Italian Jazz Musicians (Midj) and Casa del Jazz from Rome. I-Jazz, Puglia Sounds and Casa del Jazz are members of the Europe Jazz Network.
