Julius Eastman – Evil Nigger
The classically-trained pianist, singer, dancer and composer Julius Eastman was one of the great musical polymaths of the 20th century. His life was characterised by great contrasts. Balancing the established, academic contemporary music field, performing with Morton Feldman, John Cage, Pauline Oliveros and New York’s downtown scene. He was among the first to combine minimalist art music with elements of pop in his compositions – a direction continued by Rhys Chatham and Arthur Russell. He died homeless in 1990. Eastman’s contribution was to expand hardcore process-oriented Minimalism, finding ways to fit in expressive dissonances and improvisation. Evil Nigger (1979) is a tremendous piano piece, here performed on two grand pianos, with a clear political sting. “What I am trying to achieve is to be what I am to the fullest – black to the fullest, a musician to the fullest, and a homosexual to the fullest.” Julius Eastman.
Nora Mulder & Nico Chientaroli – piano
Amsterdam Real Book
The Amsterdam Real Book started off as a project to build a bridge between the new up-and-coming scene of improvisers in Amsterdam around such players as Yedo Gibson, John Dikeman and Oscar Jan Hoogland, and the internationally known New Dutch Swing scene with its roots in the instant composing of Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink and Willem Breuker. Full on rock-based free improv meets lively jazz-based instant composing. The Amsterdam improvisers are famous all over the world for their groundbreaking treatment of composition within jazz. Cutting-edge playful and smart. The repertoire includes music by Misha Mengelberg, Sean Bergin, The Ex, Paul Termos, Theo Loevendie, Michael Moore, Willem Breuker, Leo Cuypers, Guus Janssen, Ab Baars, Oscar Jan Hoogland, Jack Bulterman, Joost Buis and Tristan Honsinger.
