Journeys are an integral part of our lives, whether physical, mental, or emotional, literal or imagined, planned or enforced. In our jazz series with international and UK artists, you will find many meeting points of musical journeys – be it shared history, style crossovers or family ties. Now officially open for booking - we welcome everyone to explore #InspiringMusic. Discover our 3 jazz stories from across his season:
Jazz Greats from the US
Composer and pianist Carla Bley’s journey has taken her from working in New York’s legendary Birdland jazz club in the 1950’s to being named a Jazz Master by America’s National Endowment of the Arts in 2015. Her visit with long-time trio partners Steve Swallowand Andy Sheppard is one highlight of our jazz series which also includes US saxophonist of the moment Chris Potter with his CircuitsTrio featuring James Francies and Eric Harland.
Collide - Merge - Create
Groundbreaking contemporary jazz composers & pianists, Nikki Yeoh and Zoe Rahman will have you at the edge of your seat as they share their talents across two grand pianos. Featuring the extraordinary sisters Ingrid & Christine Jensen, the newly-assembled 18-piece Whirlwind Jazz Orchestra unites a galaxy of Canadian, US and European musicians. Blurring the lines between classical and jazz, discovering the possibilities of eight saxophones in full battle, the Apollo and Artvark saxophone quartets create a new sound world together as a cohesive whole.
Global Connection
Internationally acclaimed singer Natacha Atlas performs music from her new Whirlwind release Strange Days, a pioneering marriage of jazz and the mystique of Arabic vocals. She is joined by Randolph Matthews who is known for mixing original music with surprising reworks of classic repertoire. For those wishing to explore more connections between East and West, the Debashish Bhattacharya Trio’s fusion of Indian ragas and bluesy Western music might be the way to go.

TURNER SIMS AUTUMN 2019 SEASON … explore #InspiringMusic
A few words about some of our prominent programming strands:
Our Classical series includes chamber music, orchestra concerts and intimate solo recitals. SÓN, our orchestra in association, hosts a participatory concert in aid of Wessex Cancer Trust, and our associate artist Lawrence Power returns for a duo programme with Simon Crawford-Phillips. String quartet fans can look forward to Quatuor Bozzini, Doric String Quartet and Borodin Quartet with Barry Douglas. Our Piano Series sees recitals fromIsata Kanneh-Mason, Angela Hewitt, Stephen Hough, and Joanna MacGregor, while “Beethoven, Wordsworth and the French Revolution” features the Jupiter Ensemble with David Owen Norris performing on an 1826 Broadwood pianoforte. Eden Stell Duo play Spanish, baroque and classical pieces for guitars, whereas the London Sinfonietta present minimalist works by Glass and Reich. Finally, the London Mozart Players Chamber Ensemble returns for a second concert in their 70th anniversary year and Fretwork and soprano Elin Manahan Thomas ring in the festive period with “An Elizabethan Christmas”.
Folk music friends can look forward to Hannah James, who has been an unmatched force of innovation in British folk for nearly two decades, appearing with her JigDoll Ensemble. Performing in period costumes, the Mellstock Band celebrate “Christmas Frolics” on a mix of early and modern instruments.
You won’t have to travel far to listen to music from Africa, Asia or South America this autumn as our Global series sees stunning Sahrawi vocalistAziza Brahim, Indian guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya and Egyptian-British vocalist Natacha Atlas perform here in Southampton. Welsh harpistCatrin Finch embarks on tour once again with the Columbian group Cimarrón, and a joint concert of the University of Southampton Voices with Brazilian singer Mônica Vasconcelos unites local and international talent. Reza Pakravan’s RGS lecture about the Sahelian belt complements this series.
Equally, our Jazz series will take you on an excursion around the extensive musical territory that is jazz. Alina Bzhezhinska’s HipHarp Collective puts a lesser known inhabitant of this territory into the spotlight, whilst Apollo and Artvark unite for a double-saxophone-quartet concert. Looking farther geographically, expect to encounter Norwegian trumpeter Mathias Eick, Canadians Christine and Ingrid Jensen with the Whirlwind Jazz Orchestra, Texas-based Hot Club of Cowtown, the Chris Potter Circuits Trio featuring James Francies & Eric Harland, or the Carla Bley Trio, a landmark group in jazz history. UK jazz favourites Kairos 4tet make a long-awaited return together with vocalist Emilia Mårtensson, and Mark Lockheart presents his ‘Days on Earth’ project with a star studded ensemble. Adding even more captivating voices to this season, Natacha Atlas interweaves jazz and Arabic vocals together with special guest Randolph Matthews, Joe Stilgoe brings musical moments of movie history to life for Christmas, and Ute Lemper shares her story of a personal encounter with Marlene Dietrich.
Also: film, family events, free lunchtime concerts and more.
