Grammy Award winning composer and bandleader Maria Schneider presents the music from her magnum opus 'Data Lords’ together with the highly acclaimed Oslo Jazz Ensemble on tour in Europe. Starting on March 1st , Schneider and the Norwegian band will visit Luxembourg, London, Stockholm, Brno, Vienna, Budapest and Hamburg.
Schneider and the Norwegian musicians have a long-term relation, stretching back to 2014, when the Norwegians and Schneider met almost by accident at a festival in South Africa. Following several festival concerts in Norway and Europe the last two years, Maria Schneider entrusted Oslo Jazz Ensemble a European tour featuring the music of her twice Grammy-awarded double album ‘Data Lords’.
The trailblazing composer and orchestra leader Maria Schneider is one of the jazz world’s most original and respected voices. The music of ‘Data Lords’ is inspired by the conflicting relationships between the digital and the natural worlds. “No one can deny the impact that the data-hungry digital world has had on our lives. As big data companies clamor for our attention, I know that I’m not alone in struggling to find space, to stay connected with my quieter inner world, with nature and the simpler things in life,” says Schneider. “As I’ve felt myself ping pong between the digital world and our real world, those same polar extremes have shown up in my music, so it was only natural that the music would become a two-album release.”
Oslo Jazz Ensemble features some of Norway's most renowned musicians in jazz. This large ensemble has the unique ability to perform as a "18-piece jazz quintet", switching from blazing ensemble playing into intuitive and personal interpretation in a split second. Visiting composers and soloists from other countries recognize and acknowledge this capability, especially when performing contemporary repertoire.
