SWEDEN is the focus guest country showcased at JAZZ I AM 2025

Barcelona 12 - 14 March

The 7th edition of JAZZ I AM, the international jazz meeting organised by Taller de Mùsics, will take place in Barcelona from the 12th to the 14th March 2025 and will have SWEDEN as the focus country.

The event is organised in collaboration with GAC - Göteborg Artist Center, Knutpunkt - the network, Semente Cultural Productions and Export Music Sweden, with the support of Kulturrådet/Swedish Arts Council.

Two acts have been selected, after an open call to Swedish artists, and will perform in Barcelona during the meeting days, on Thursday 13th of March.

HANNES BENNICH

Swedish saxophonist and composer Hannes Bennich has distinguished himself in the jazz scene, earning acclaim for his performances at notable venues and festivals, including the Copenhagen Jazz Festival and Ronnie Scotts. His debut album, When Losing a Dream to Reality, reveals an innovative jazz style that transcends traditional genre boundaries, drawing from contemporary influences. Bennich leads his quartet, with Britta Virves on piano, Tomas Sjödell on bass and Emil Norman on drums, blending various musical influences from classical-jazz to global rhythms, signalling a new era in jazz.

Bennich’s music is characterized by its melodic depth and a distinctive Nordic touch, combining traditional melodies with American jazz harmonies and modern jazz innovation. This unique blend not only showcases his artistry but also connects diverse cultural expressions, making his work a narrative of global jazz exploration. By integrating these influences, Bennich crafts a sound that is both reflective and ground-breaking, affirming his status as an innovative force within the jazz community.

SISTERS OF INVENTIONS

Sisters of Invention is a Swedish duo consisting of Malin and Karolina Almgren.

From a very young age, the sisters began making music together, and their band has now been active for more than 20 years.

Their music can be described as colorful and groovy, as well as poetic and vulnerable. New and full of personality. There’s a natural musicality in this duo, and they bring their unique touch to everything they create. They focus on strong melodies and rhythms, and as a listener, you can prepare to be amazed by the variety of sounds and styles they offer. Their music is modern and fresh, yet never overly complicated. The name Sisters of Invention fits them perfectly, as they are constantly inventing new ways to work with music.

The duo has performed at numerous major venues and festivals across Sweden and Europe. In 2016, they won the award for Best Group at the Euro Radio Jazz Competition in Amsterdam, and in 2017, they were named Group of the Year by SR P2’s Jazzkatten (Swedish Radio). They have released four albums under the Oh Yeah Records label: Om & Om Igen (2013), Navigating (2015), SOL (2018), and Sisterhood (2023).

Over the years, Sisters of Invention have collaborated with numerous Swedish musicians, including Nils Landgren, Rigmor Gustafsson, Ida Sand, Jonas Kullhammar, and Jacob Karlzon.

They have also led various projects, such as Dubbelduon, and composed music for big bands, jazz ensembles, and duos.
