House of Music Hungary

Description:

Nearly 15 years ago, we set ourselves the goal of creating a new institution that would bring music closer to as many people in Hungary as possible. We intended to establish a place that speaks not only to professionals, but primarily to a broader audience open to music. A place that supports the presentation of young Hungarian talent, and fosters musical encounters not only within Hungary, but also through international collaborations.

As a result of an international architectural competition, an outstanding building was completed by 2022—one that respects its surroundings and forms a meaningful connection with them. A structure that enables us to experiment with presenting music in new, more complex ways, different from conventional approaches. A house that allows us to test innovative methods in music education.

This mission is supported by a range of tools and spaces previously unknown or less common in Hungary: interactive music exhibition halls, the Sound Dome, the Creative Sound Space, studios, the multimedia club library, the musical playground, and the various concert halls themselves. We consider it our task to preserve and present the values of Hungarian and international folk music, jazz, electronic and popular music, and-last but not least—classical music. Our educational programmes teach through entertainment, seeking new forms of music education and encouraging encounters between musical genres that strengthen one another.

The House of Music Hungary is therefore a complex institution, not only architecturally but also in its mission. Its exhibitions, educational programmes, and concert activities all carry features of a museum, a concert centre, and a school-yet the emphasis is not on separation, but on the interplay between these functions.
