David Murray Quartet
Since he arrived in NY in 1975, David Murray established himself as one of the prominent saxophone players and leaders of jazz. His approach to improvisation is instantly recognizable. Even in its freest flights, he acknowledges the gravity of a tradition he honors more than most, combining all the influences he grew out of: gospel, jazz, free/avant-garde jazz, rhythm’n blues, R&B and also in his associations with great American writers.
David Murray’s new quartet started off with a week-long sold out shows at the Village Vanguard in New York, in January 2023. Critics unanimously agree he is at the top of his game! The combination of his mastery along with the infusion of this powerful elite of the New York jazz scene is a force to be reckoned with. The fierceness of Marta Sanchez on the piano, the poetry and dexterity of Luke Stewart on the bass, and the driving pulse of Russell Carter on the drums is a perfect fit for the leading saxophonist of his era.
Murray says: “There is no better feeling than revealing a band of youthful creative musicians who aspire to be the cream that rises to the top!”
"Murray’s sound is fabulous as usual and the rhythm section’s drive is unprecedented. (…) The fact that he also manages to deliver an energetic encore after this musical marathon is further proof of his exceptional artistic qualities" (JazzEnzo, 2023)
“While he often plays with economy and acuity, he can still blow dense and hard with unassailable fluency” Downbeat, 2022
“the stark, irrepressible soloist, as creative and inspired as in his best days, but with a halo of maturity.” El Pais, 2022
“Murray is back: don’t underestimate him.” Musica Jazz, 2022
First album on Intakt will be released in May 2024
