Michael Pipoquiinha Quartet - UM NOVO TOM
“Um Novo Tom” was produced in 2020 meaning a deeper dive by Pipoquinha into his verve as a composer, with original themes made by the piano that the artist had at home. The challenge was to work on something new, valuing melodies and paths not related to Brazilian genres (rhythms) as a guide. In this way, the title “Um Novo Tom” converges the proposal of new sounds and the arrival of Pipoquinha’s youngest son (Tom), to who he dedicates the album.
The arrangements were mostly made in collaboration with pianist Thiago Almeida and some songs were recorded as they came to life on the double bass, as in “Maurício” and “Ballad for Keith”. Despite the proposal not to be based on any specific Brazilian rhythm, Pipoquinha admits that Brazilianness is felt in the way the musicians perform the songs.
With the influences of modern Jazz, Be-bop, Groove, Soul, Ballada, World Music, among other genres, it presents a sound able to transverse and suprise all those who are available for the plot of the composition and the range of effects. An invitation to people who enjoy fusions, alternative music and a great attraction especially for young audiences.
The album carries many inspirations and deep tributes, such as “Tipo Dani”, dedicated to the musician and friend Daniel Santiago, in “Momento Sagrado”, due to the influence of the sounds of bassist and singer ThunderCat, in “Maurício” which he made for a friend who lwas a victim of Covid-19, in “Ballad for Keith” a tribute to the pianist Keith Jarrett at the end of his career and in “O Auge do Amor” (the peak of love) which he made cradling his son Tom in his arms. An homage to some of those who made and continue to make their way challenging and inspiring.
