From: Jazz North (UK)
To: Svensk Jazz (Sweden)
Dates: 28 - 31 May 2024
The goal of my staff exchange was to take a deep dive into the workings of two similar organisations and investigate our shared opportunities and challenges: Jazz North as the development agency for jazz in the North of England and Svensk Jazz as an association of jazz industry professionals across Sweden.
I came away full to the brim with the value of cross-border connections, potential for collaborations with those I had met, intel to share with Jazz North’s roster of artists and so much inspiration for my programme of work back home. What an amazing opportunity EJN offers!
I spent three days with Lisa and Louise - the Svensk Jazz team - as we compared approaches to touring and network support, artist communities, organisational structures, funding models, future-proofing and sustainability. We finished up our last day with a traditional Swedish lunch (pickled herring!) and a classic SWOT analysis - discovering most of our strengths and opportunities were very much mirrored!
I spent a day of the exchange visiting organisations working to support and promote Swedish artists - Musikalliansen, Export Music Sweden and Musikcentrum Öst. Louise, Lisa and Ragnar (CEO of Musikcentrum Öst) facilitated meetings with Loredana Franza of Semente and Mattias Albinsson of Headstomp.
Glorious evenings were spent in Stockholm’s music venues (the famous Fasching, Glenn Miller Cafe and Orionteatern) absorbing the sounds of the Swedish scene (with some visiting guests!): Mattias Risberg's Mining XL, Tonbruket, Selma Pinton, folk duo Riksspelman Lukas Arvidsson & Mattias Wager and outstanding Ghanaian Frafra artist, Florence Adooni!
This experience has fostered genuine connection and hopefully a lifelong collaborative relationship with Svensk Jazz and its brilliant associated organisations. I’d highly recommend this opportunity to anyone who gets the chance to participate!
