"It has been great to expand my network and get inspiration and ideas on how to enhance our own festival"
From: Punkt (Norway)
To: Jazzfest Berlin/ Berliner Festspiele (Germany)
Dates: 30 October - 08 November 2022
First of all, I want to thank the EJN and the Jazzfest Berlin for the opportunity to partake in the exchange program!
I came to Berlin for the a few days before the festival itself and was able to attend the Kick-off at Pierre Boulez Saal on Sunday the 30th of October. It was great to meet parts of the team and see a wonderful concert with Alexander Hawkins.
The days leading up to the festival were spent getting to know the whole Jazzfest Team, the Haus der Berliner Festspiele and the organization. Coming from a small festival who has been moving between different venues for the last years, it was quite different to visit a festival who has a large organization behind it and a huge venue as their home. Even though there are many differences, there were much to learn that I can take with me back to Punkt.
The main points would be:
• The synergy between all the festivals operating out of Berliner Festspiele, as sharing the marketing department, staff and experiances.
• The personal follow up of artist before, under and after the event. Especially liked that they are sending out personal emails to all after the festival.
• The organization of tasks between the members of the team.
During the 4 days of the festival, I helped the team with various tasks such as getting setlists from all the artists for GEMA, the German organization who manage the artists rights of use for their works, helping backstage and at venues out of the house and meet and greet artists upon arrival. I was luckily able to see many of the concerts during the festival and especially the concert with Lucian Ban, John Surman and Mat Maneri at Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche made a mark. Their Transylvanian Folk Songs in the most beautiful venue will be remembered for a long time.
Taking part of the exchange program was a great experience and I have gained “colleagues” that I will be in touch with in the future. It has been great to expand my network and get inspiration and ideas on how to enhance our own festival. I look forward to see everyone again, next time I visit Berlin!
